Queer artist Sia donates proceeds from Eminem collaboration to LGBT youth charity

A few days back, Sia — the queer-identified singer-songwriter — was criticized for collaborating with Eminem, specifically after the latter released the incredibly homophobic “Rap God.”

Sia had an extensive Twitter discussion with writer Keo Nozari on whether or not Eminem actually is homophobic and whether or not Sia’s collaboration with him served to validate Em’s rhetoric, which you can catch here. After reflecting on their debate, Sia reportedly decided to turn lemons into lemon meringue pie* by donating part of the proceeds from her and Mathers’ joint effort to the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center.

According to SheWired, Furler made the decision in the hopes that her contribution would outweigh Mathers’ homophobic lyrics, saying “I feel powerless. I thought Slim Shady had been put to bed. Now what’s done is done on my end.” Her donation will go to helping homeless LGBT youth in the area, funding educational and job placement services as well as a 50-bed shelter.

Now to be fair, I don’t think Sia is homophobic so much as she bet on the wrong horse. That being said, if she’s willing to admit to her mistakes and use the money to do something good for LGBT kids in need? More power to her. And now to post one of her own songs, rather than her aforementioned collaboration with whatshisname. Buttface? Yeah, that sounds right.

*I was going to say lemonade, but . . . Well, lemon meringue pie is better.
