Xtra interviews The King’s Body director João Pedro Rodrigues about his ode to the first (self-proclaimed) king of Portugal, who reigned in the 12th century.

In Rodrigues’s film, various men undress as they read from historical texts about Dom Afonso Henriques, a man reputed to have enormous strength and a beautiful body that bore the scars of numerous battles.

The stories of our lives are written on our bodies, Rodrigues says.
