Provincetown goes digital

New 'iPtown' app takes an artistic and whimsical approach

Provincetown is hailed by tourism officials as the home of “the country’s oldest continuous art colony and a model for progressivism” and is world-renowned as a gay-friendly place. Now, a new “iPtown” app has been launched that has an artistic and whimsical approach befitting of the town’s image.

The app features nearly a dozen different sections to help visitors and locals find services, food and lodging, shopping, special events and happenings around town. There are hundreds of links to individual business and attraction webpages, and the app integrates its functions with social media.

“Everyone who has a special relationship with Provincetown can now become an iPtowner,” says Anthony Fuccillo, Ptown’s director of tourism. “The iPtown app will not only be a wonderful tool for those new to Provincetown, but it will also be a great resource while there — or for those just daydreaming about a trip to where memories are made.”

The app takes a whimsical and artistic approach to graphics for the information icons. “Useful Information” is depicted by the iconic telephone operator played by lesbian comic Lily Tomlin, who made “One Ringy-Dingy” a classic skit.

Other icons use the quaint town architecture as motifs and backgrounds. There’s a muscle-boy cycling shopper, gays dancing in a club and a colourful rainbow-covered town scene welcoming the LGBT community.

Located on the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown, Massachusetts, has been on the leading edge ever since America was launched with the signing of the Mayflower Compact, and the town is now unveiling a smartphone app as unique as its one-of-a-kind reputation.

The iPtown app is free and available for smartphone and tablet (iOS) and Android.
