US and UK governments mark Pride. Canada? Nada

Federal governments in the UK and US are marking Pride this month with parties and policy promises, but there's only silence from Canada's Conservative government.

The White House is planning a reception next week to mark Pride, the Advocate reports. US President Barack Obama recently declared June to be "LGBT Pride Month" for the second year in a row.

Is it all just tokenism? Efforts to achieve legal equality have been slow under Obama's administration, but Obama at least deserves some props. When was the last time you heard Stephen Harper even say the word "gay" in public?

Across the Atlantic, the UK's new Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition hosted a pre-Pride party today. The UK government also just launched a queer issues policy plan, which includes:

  • allowing gay people to have religious civil partnerships;
  • lobbying other countries to repeal homophobic laws and recognize UK civil partnerships;
  • removing historical convictions for consensual gay sex from criminal records;
  • tackling homophobic bullying;
  • better recording of hate crimes;
  • ending deportation of LGBT asylum seekers fleeing homophobic countries.

Here in Canada, the Tories won't be hosting a Pride reception, and Stephen Harper won't be making any Pride proclamations.

And why would he? The Harper government's record on queer issues is shameful, most recently including:

Just something to think about this Pride season.

Was this written in the Ottawa or Vancouver edition? Because so many queer people in Toronto have turned their backs on Pride, how can we blame our federal government for doing the same? Some gay folks in Toronto would prefer to address foreign affairs during Pride, rather than the rise in hate crimes in Canada or the continued efforts of the religious right (Christian and Muslim) to challenge our rights and halt progress. Harper has never been an ally, but we as a community have been too busy trying to bring eachother down that we've done nothing to change the hearts and minds of the PMO (or have them voted out). Then there are others who claim we've accomplished everything we can and we don't need to celebrate Pride anymore, but I guess those people have never had bottles thrown at them from moving vehicles whilst leaving a gay club before. Perhaps instead of tearing Pride down, we as LGBT Canadians start to get our priorities right and demand that our government listens to us. Before SunTV goes to air and the Canadian mainstream starts to think like Ron.
Harper doesn't hate gays..
Harper doesn't hate gays...just the slimy far-left extremist pedophile anti-semite queers of downtown Toronto.
Man I fucking hate Harper.
Man I fucking hate Harper.

- when you're not busy hating on Pride Toronto for just trying put on a festival
- whining about Elton John being paid to perform at Rush Limbaugh's wedding while not putting your money where your mouth is as gay bookstores close, gay magazines fold, gay club shut their doors or become alternative/mixed, gay authors seek readers/buyers, and gay artists go mainstream to survive
- gays are bashed, bullied, and beaten on the streets
- gushing over Gaga or Glee
Dave, I happen to speak out
Dave, I happen to speak out against both the Harper government as well as Israelie Aparthied. It`s funny that the Harper government is the strongest supporter of Israel, (never condemning any of their actions) and also pne of the most anti-queer leaders in the western countries.
