California: Court rules against queer groups barred from parade

BY NATASHA BARSOTTI — Despite losing its bid to force organizers of the Little Saigon Tet Parade to include them in Sunday's event, the Partnership of Viet Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organizations says it nevertheless intends to attend and participate in the parade, the Orange County Register reports.

According to the report, the city of Westminister, which has put on the parade, accepted the queer contingent's involvement in the event over the past three years but said it could not afford to host it this year. The Vietnamese-American groups that stepped into the breach to organize Sunday's event did not want the queer coalition's participation.

Still, coalition member Ian Van Cong says the group won the community's support even if it didn't win the court fight. Support came from several quarters, both locally and nationally, including the Garden Grove Unified School District, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Lambda Legal, the Public Law Center, API Equality-LA and the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of Southern California.
