Madonna to be tried in Russian court for promoting homosexuality
There was controversy surrounding Madonna's Russian performances for the MDNA tour before she had even graced the stage. She vowed to stand up for gay rights in the country, which, under Putin's oppression, has outlawed the promotion of homosexuality to minors.
While performing in Moscow, Madonna advocated for the freedom of jailed rockers Pussy Riot, and in St Petersburg she handed out pink anti-homophobia bracelets, telling her fans to "fight for the right to be free."
A lawsuit was filed by the Union of Russian Citizens, the People's Assembly and the New Great Russia party based on claims that her actions caused "psychological stress and emotional shock."
Court official Sergei Zaitsev has ruled that there is sufficient cause for the $6.5 million suit to proceed because Madonna "crossed the line" in handing out the bracelets to "children as young as 12."
