Goldfrapp explores gender identity in new video for ‘Annabel’

On the surface, Goldfrapp’s new music video for the single “Annabel” is a visually beautiful and audibly entrancing look at the gender identity of the titular hero. But as it turns out, there’s even more to it than that.

As it turns out, “Annabel” is actually based on the Kathleen Winter novel of the same name, about an intersex child forced to live as a boy in rural 1960s Canada. I know, music with a history lesson, but the song and video are absolutely stunning, and I’ve been spamming the repeat button for a good hour on this one.
