Sarah Stanley: My favourite gay travel destination

Theatre director Sarah Stanley discovered Armistead Maupin and a 'long-lost lover'

Whether it’s the bustle of New York or the Mayan ruins of Tulum, often one vacation spot resonates with us and becomes a favourite travel memory.

We asked 20 gay celebrities, business people and movers and shakers, “What is your favourite gay travel destination?”

“Armistead Maupin’s San Francisco. Been there once, just after Maupin released Michael Tolliver Lives, a return to Tales of the City after 20 years. Flying in, I was buzzing with anticipation of hooking up with San Francisco, my long-lost lover. Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Books was the first date. Dazzling.” — Sarah Stanley, associate artistic director, English Theatre, National Arts Centre
